Untraced Driver Accident Claims

If you’ve been unfortunate enough to have been involved in a road traffic accident in which the driver of the other car has left the scene, more commonly known as a ‘hit and run’, then all is not lost. Despite there being no other driver to claim against for compensation, Alkers Solicitors’ experienced hit and run claims solicitors can help you secure financial compensation for any personal injuries you may have suffered as a result, as well as damage to your vehicle.

Whether you are located in Poulton-le-Fylde, Blackpool, Lancashire or the UK in general, if you have been the victim of a hit and run accident in which the driver remains untraced, then contact the team at Alkers Solicitors today. We will provide free and independent advice on how to proceed with your compensation claim. Call freephone 0800 00 55 44 or contact us via the on-line enquiry form and one of our specialist hit and run claims solicitors will be more than happy to offer you the advice you need.

‘Hit and Run’ Claims Solicitors: the MIB

The Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MIB) was set up for just this situation. Funded by all other UK insurers, the MIB is a not-for-profit organisation which helps accident victims who have been injured, or whose vehicle has been damaged, by an uninsured driver or a driver who leaves the scene. It is possible to claim both personal injury compensation and property damage via the MIB hit and run accident scheme (known as the Untraced Drivers Agreement) subject to some restrictions.

When making an untraced driver accident claim from the MIB, it is essential that the accident you were involved in is reported to the police. In most cases this will probably have happened at the scene.

Although we recognise that this will be a stressful and upsetting time for you, there are a number of things that would really help you claim the compensation to which you are entitled:

A) Report the case to the police if they are not already aware of the accident. This is very important to the MIB when they are dealing with the claim.

B) Make sure you receive medical attention if you have suffered injuries in the accident.

C) Try and make a note of all the details you can of the accident including registration numbers of the other driver or part numbers; any details you can collect about the other car/vehicle and any details of any witnesses to the accident can only help your compensation claim.

D) If you can, take photos of the accident scene (or ask a friend to do this for you) to help you with any discrepancies between your account and that of any witnesses.

E) Get a repair quote on your vehicle. An engineer will more than likely want to look at the damage at some point during the claim but an estimate will give a useful guide to any repair costs (please note: the MIB will only deal with repair costs if the other vehicle is identified or traced – any claim is subject to a £300 excess.).
